Chapter Eleven
Opal heard the sound of an automobile and nearly passed out. Her vision faded under dancing, black spots and her head grew fuzzy. She stumbled and caught herself on the edge of the dining table. She struggled for breath, but feared she’d lose it all before Sam even reached the porch.
And she knew it was Sam. For one, nobody else had ever showed up at the Double O in an automobile. For two, today was the day he planned to interrupt the meeting at the bank and fight for her rights against foreclosure. He would be coming with news of her future. She’d been forced to put all her trust in Sam and Opal didn’t know if she could handle it if he hadn’t come through for her.
Sam walked into the house without knocking. He’d grown too comfortable on the ranch, but for once Opal didn’t mind his audacity. She didn’t know if she could make it to the door to let him in, so it was just as well he took it upon himself to enter.
One look at her brought him to a complete stop. She clung to the table, terrified to ask and battling back tears. Sam smiled.
“Horsham’s been embezzling from the bank, Opal. They’re not going to take your home.”
Relief did what fear could not, and Opal sank to the floor. She knelt, her hands above her head, still gripping the edge of the table, and fought for control. She stared down at her lap as her lungs twisted and her spine seemed to catch fire.
Sam dropped to his knees next to her and caught her face between his palms. “It’s all done, honey.”
Opal managed to let go of the table to throw her arms around Sam’s neck. Her tears fell freely to drench his collar, but he only gathered her closer and stroked her hair. She tucked her face into his neck, breathing in the scent of him, a spiciness that had come to represent so much to her.
Sam kissed her temple. He pressed his lips to the corner of her eye and dragged them down, lifting her face as he went. Opal blindly met his kiss. A caress that had only been meant to convey her gratitude exploded into a force she didn’t care to hold back. A need for reassurance swamped her, the driving desire to share her good fortune, or celebrate it, lit a match under her lust.
She tangled her fingers in Sam’s hair and held his mouth to hers. Licking into the hot, wet depths, sliding her tongue over his and the pressure of his soft lips against hers only inspired a fierce need for more. Opal surged forward awkwardly, but Sam’s strong arms helped her, hauling her closer until her legs draped over his thighs.
Through his trousers, she felt the hardness of his cock. She shuffled closer and fit herself against him, rocking and rubbing though their clothes muted the sensations. His big hands grabbed her hips and helped readjust the angle.
